THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The controversial project was put on hold as evidence of massive corruption in the AI camera deal emerged one after another and the government found itself on the defensive against opposition allegations leveled against CM Pinarayi Vijayan. The fine imposition will also be delayed. Kerala Kaumudi had reported on May 3 that the scheme would be frozen.

Although the AI camera surveillance on the road was inaugurated, no agreement was signed between the transport department and Keltron. The AG is also investigating the deal along with various departments and the IB has also sought information. The government believes that if it goes ahead in this situation, there will be a backlash. Before freezing the project, the government had also sought legal advice. It has been decided that the project should be implemented only after the investigation report and follow-up action.

726 AI cameras have been installed in the state. It was decided to levy the fine from May 20 after a month of awareness.

Former opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala had released documents showing that even though the agreement is to pay 232.5 crores over five years, only 86 crores have been spent on installing AI cameras.

Beneficiaries include Keltron's contracted SRIT and its subcontractors, Prasadio and Troyes Infotech. What percentage of the money the three companies will get when the fines are levied is yet to be revealed.

Meanwhile, the connection of Prakash Babu, the father-in-law of the Chief Minister's son, with Prasadio Technologies also came to light. Prasadio was also launched in 2018, the same year when the government decided to launch the Safe Kerala scheme for road safety. It is alleged that this is also a mystery. Prasadio Technologies' relationship with the K-Phone project was also discussed.

Reasons to withdraw

  • Keltron outsourced against the contract, in an increasingly murky camera deal.
  • The secret move of the outsourcers to scam many times the price of the camera has come to light.
  • The relationship of a close relative of the Chief Minister with the company that won the outsourcing contract came to light.

Officials in a frenzy

Some officials have started a move to avoid the project freeze as soon as possible. The argument is that freezing the project will destroy the cameras. The Department of Motor Vehicles is also not interested in the freeze. The final agreement has to be made by the Department of Transport and Keltron. Even if the agreement is signed, it should be left for consideration by the cabinet. The Cabinet may forward it to the Law Department. The agreement will come into effect only when signed by the Transport Commissioner.
