THRISSUR: The ceiling of a government school in Kodaly, Thrissur, collapsed on Wednesday. A major disaster was averted as educational institutions observed a holiday in the district today due to the inclement weather.

The gypsum board under the sheet collapsed this morning at UP school in Kodaly, Thrissur. The ceiling collapsed in the area where students usually stood for morning assembly. This ceiling was built in 2023 with a fund of Rs 54 lakh. The fans in the auditorium were also destroyed. The debris is now scattered on the ground.

Following the incident, public workers and parents reached the school and raised complaints over the unscientific manner chosen for construction. Even two months back, the parents had complained to the authorities over the dampness felt on the walls of the school and the danger it posed. The ward member and the panchayat authorities visited the spot and inspected it.

A palm civet used to roam around the roof of the building, and the school authorities now doubt that the civet running over the roof might have caused the ceiling to collapse.
