SHANGUMUGHAM: The assailants who attacked a Grade SI and left him with a bloody nose were arrested on Monday. The Valiyathura police arrested Ramesh alias Manu (30), a native of Bangladesh Colony, Vallakadavu, and Sharoon alias Jagan (25), a native of Lissy Road, Valiyathura.

On Sunday 11 pm, a complaint reached the nearby police station about two people creating a ruckus in Shanghumugham beach in inebriated condition. Grade SI Biju, who was on night duty at Valiyathura police station, arrived on the spot to quell tensions. While attempting to drive them away from the beach, the assailants charged at the police officer and roughed him up in front of the public.

The SI suffered a broken nose in the attack and fainted on the ground. The people on the beach alerted the police, and more cops reached the spot. The accused were subdued and taken into custody later. They were remanded. Ramesh was recently released on bail in the murder case, and Jagan in an MDMA case.

Due to inappropriate lighting after 8 pm, Shangumugham beach and its surroundings are now a haven for anti-social elements. Gangs are involved in public drinking, harassing women and extorting money. A demand has been made to strengthen night-time patrolling in the region.
