Heavy rainfall expected in one district; Yellow alert issued in several areas

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Central Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rains in the state for the next five days. An orange alert has been declared in Ernakulam is on orange alert. Chance of very heavy rain at isolated places is forecast.

Yellow alert has been announced in Alappuzha, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts today. A chance of isolated heavy rain is forecast. Heavy rainfall is defined by the Central Meteorological Department as rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in 24 hours. Thunderstorms are expected. Thunderstorms accompanying summer rains are dangerous.

According to the Central Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of moderate rain with thunder and lightning at isolated places in all the districts during the next three hours and strong winds with a speed of up to 40 kmph.

An orange alert has been announced for Kannur and Kasaragod districts, and a yellow alert for Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad. Only Wayanad has orange alert on Wednesday. Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod are on yellow alert.

Yellow alert is in Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod on Thursday and Kannur and Kasaragod on Friday.

The National Center for Oceanographic Studies (INCOIS) has informed that there is a possibility of rough sea phenomenon and high waves along Kerala coast and Tamil Nadu coast till 11.30 pm tomorrow. Fishermen and coastal residents in these areas should exercise special caution.

Precautions

1. As the rough seas are likely to intensify, stay away from the dangerous areas per the authorities' instructions.

2. Keep fishing vessels safely moored in the harbour. Keeping a safe distance between boats can avoid the possibility of collision. Safety of fishing equipment should be ensured.

3. Avoid trips to the beach and activities at sea completely.
