MALAPPURAM: Malappuram DCC General Secretary Adv. Beena Joseph has confirmed that senior BJP leader M.T. Ramesh met her in person, amid speculation surrounding the BJP planning to field an independent candidate for the Nilambur by-election. However, Beena made it clear that she has no intention of contesting the election.
Speaking to the media, Beena Joseph reiterated her commitment to the Congress party, stating, “I wish to continue as a Congress worker and will actively campaign for Aryadan Shoukath.” She also expressed displeasure over the lack of internal discussions within the Congress before the party announced its candidate.
The BJP, which has announced that it will not be contesting in Nilambur, had approached BDJS to field a candidate. However, BDJS reportedly remains undecided, with internal differences emerging over participation in the bypoll. A final decision is yet to be taken, as discussions with BDJS state president Thushar Vellappally have been sought following an inconclusive online council meeting.
In light of the uncertainty, the BJP is now exploring the possibility of supporting an independent candidate. Sources indicate that Beena Joseph had earlier shown interest in contesting under the Congress banner but was not selected. MT Ramesh is said to have met her in Manjeri to discuss the political scenario. Beena described the meeting as unexpected and declined to reveal the specifics of their conversation, stating that it would not be appropriate.
