India’s 'father of angioplasty' no more; Dr Mathew Samuel Kalarickal passes away at 77

CHENNAI: Cardiologist Dr. Mathew Samuel Kalarikkal passed away. He was 77. He passed away at Apollo Hospital in Chennai. Dr. Mathew Samuel is known as India’s father of angioplasty.

Dr. Mathew Kalarikkal performed the first coronary angioplasty in India in 1986. In 2000, he was honoured by the government with the Padma Shri. The funeral will be held on Monday, April 21 at 2 pm at his home in Manganam, Kottayam, and at 3 pm at the St. Peter's Marthoma Church Cemetery, Manganam.

Born on January 6, 1948 in Kottayam, Dr. Mathew Samuel graduated from Aluva UC College. He then completed his MBBS from Kottayam Medical College in 1974, his MD from Stanley Medical College and his DM in Cardiology from Madras Medical College. Dr. Mathew Samuel started his medical career as a tutor in pediatric surgery.

Dr. Mathew Samuel has worked in renowned hospitals including Apollo Hospital, Chennai, Lilavati Hospital, Breach Candy Hospital and Saifee Hospital, Mumbai.
