PALAKKAD: The number of people suffering from sunstroke is rising across Kerala. Recently, two individuals sought medical attention in the Palakkad district: Jayan, an autorickshaw driver in the Lakkidi Koottupatha area, and Jayashree, a resident of Ottapalam. Both received treatment after being affected.
In Kollam, a youth named Nihal Najeeb from Kottiyam suffered burns on his hand while riding his two-wheeler near Pallimukku. He was on his way to work when the injury occurred and has since sought primary medical treatment. Meanwhile, in Kottayam, a firefighter named Nijil, an officer at the Kottayam station, suffered sunstroke and burns while clearing a fallen tree from a road near Kooroppada, Pampady.
The situation has turned tragic in several instances. Two people were found dead with symptoms of sunstroke in Kollam and Palakkad recently, and a young man named Sanalkumar passed away from heat-related causes in Kannur. In Kunnikode, Kollam, 84-year-old Air Force veteran Baby Philip was found dead on his farm around 11:30 AM; he exhibited distinct red marks on his face and hands.
In another incident, 60-year-old Basheer from Thottungal City, Pattambi, collapsed in the compound of his home. Although locals rushed him to the Pattambi Taluk Hospital, he could not be saved. While his death is widely suspected to be the result of sunstroke, official confirmation is still pending.
The Disaster Management Authority has issued a high-alert advisory following reports of eight sunstroke cases across various districts in a single day.
