THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that Kerala Kaumudi was the driving force behind bringing social renaissance in Kerala. The Chief Minister was inaugurating the concluding session of the 114th anniversary celebrations of Kerala Kaumudi at a grand function held at the Mascot Hotel.

CM PINARAYI VIJAYAN:

“Kerala Kaumudi was the voice of the oppressed during the era when casteist oppression and untouchability were rampant. The paper played a pivotal role in the Renaissance movements in building Kerala. On February 11, 1911, the first editor, CV Kunhiraman, christened the name 'Kerala Kaumudi'. It was a meaningful name with a long-term vision. Kunhiraman constantly worked for the welfare of the backward classes and also tried to popularise the Guru's philosophy.

His successor, editor K Sukumaran's editorials were frank statements against injustice. The political analyses in Kerala Kaumudi were always impartial. The exclusive news provided with documents often puts governments on the defensive.

The world came to know about many covert political moves and corruption through Kerala Kaumudi. Investigative journalism was the paper’s forte. The paper introduced a new factual style of reporting through acute political analyses. It is commendable that Kerala Kaumudi is still able to retain that honesty, development orientation and factual reporting even in these changed times.

However, some media portals carry out a special agenda to portray Kerala in a bad light.”

The Chief Minister also wished that the responsible media work demanded by the present times can continue under the leadership of Chief Editor Deepu Ravi.

Chief Editor Deepu Ravi presided over the function. Associate Editor V.S. Rajesh welcomed the gathering. Ministers P. Rajeev, V. Sivankutty, Congress Working Committee member Ramesh Chennithala and former Union Minister of State V. Muraleedharan extended their greetings.
