NEW DELHI: C Sadanandan, a nominated member from Kerala, displayed his prosthetic legs on the table in the Rajya Sabha to elucidate on what led to him losing both his legs in Kannur’s political violence. After opposition from CPM members, the prosthetic legs were removed from the table on the instructions of Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan.
Sadanandan was appointed by the central government to initiate the discussion on the Motion of Thanks on the President's policy address in the Rajya Sabha. The opposition also objected to him taking off his prosthetic legs, placing them on the table and sitting on his seat to start his speech.
Sadanandan cited the violence he faced in 1994 to have made him sit and deliver the motion of thanks instead of standing. This led to an uproar among the enraged CPM members. Raising a point of order, CPM leader John Brittas pointed out that Sadanandan had violated the rule that no object should be displayed inside the House. The Speaker, who accepted this, asked Sadanandan to remove his prosthetic legs from the table.
Sadanandan, a native of Mattanur, Kannur and one among the founder leaders of BJP in Kerala, was a victim of CPM brutality during the early 1990s.
