KOCHI: One of the biggest difficulties faced by people coming to Kochi to travel to Nedumbassery Airport is the trouble of reaching the airport. Passengers coming from various districts of Kerala by train have to find other transport options to reach Nedumbassery, which also costs them a significant amount of money. The demand for a railway station at Nedumbassery has been around for many years.
However, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is now studying the possibility of using the Water Metro service from Aluva to Nedumbassery for airport travel. KMRL Managing Director Loknath Behera said that a preliminary feasibility study has already been completed. Apart from the route to Nedumbassery, nine more routes have also been identified, he added. The plan is to operate a Water Metro service from Aluva to Nedumbassery via the Periyar River.
Behera shared this information during a discussion on the future of Kochi’s transport system held at the KMA Hall in Panampilly Nagar. He also mentioned that the Kochi Water Metro model is being replicated in 18 locations across the country, including major cities like Kolkata, Goa, Srinagar, and Ahmedabad.
