THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: KSRTC Swift buses have been instructed to exceed the maximum speed limit for heavy passenger vehicles as per the State Motor Vehicle Act. In the proposal issued by the Swift Special Officer last July, it is said that the Swift can run at a speed of 110 km per hour. This is while the Motor Vehicle Act is in force, stating that the maximum speed on state and national highways is 65 km and on four-lane roads the maximum speed is 70 km.

This has been specifically mentioned in the instructions issued regarding the operation of SWIFT buses. It is also proposed to increase the terminal gap and make the schedule of SWIFT buses available in all units to make the operation flawless. Schedule times of services should be displayed on the bus and at the station. According to the reports, this order was issued as per the instructions of the meeting held under the leadership of the Transport Secretary. The SWIFT Special Officer has issued the directive on the assessment that the SWIFT buses need to travel at this speed to run on time.

The instruction given to SWIFT also came to light amid report that the tourist bus that caused an accident in Vadakancherry ran at a speed of 97.72 km. The proposal is yet to be withdrawn.
