MALAPPURAM: A mini lorry fell into a water filled quarry at Athavanad in Malappuram Friday afternoon at around 1 pm. The vehicle carrying food items met with the accident. Although the lorry's driver Jaffer escaped miraculously, cleaner Musthafa is trapped inside the lorry.
Eyewitnesses said the lorry's brakes failed while coming down. Jaffer, who escaped the accident, was admitted to the hospital with minor injuries. Fire force, police and locals are engaged in the rescue operations. The vehicle carrying the load fell to a depth of 30 feet.
The lorry is completely submerged in the water filled quarry, which is located far below the road, affecting the rescue operations. Efforts are presently underway to pull out the submerged lorry using a crane. The search for Musthafa has been intensified. The terrain at the accident site and the depth of the water in the quarry are creating a major crisis for the rescue operations.
