PALAKKAD: The mother and brother of R Babu, a native of Cherad and a trekker who was rescued by the rescue team from the crevice at Kurumpachi Mala in Malampuzha, were fatally knocked down by a train. The two were found lying dead near the Kadukkamkunnu Bridge in Malampuzha. Rasheeda (46) of Cherad in Malampuzha and her son Shaji (23) are the two found dead.

The accident happened at 11 pm last night. The preliminary conclusion of the police is that it is a case of suicide and they believe that family problems may have led to the act.

Babu slipped and fell into the crevice at Kurumpachi Mala in February 2022. He climbed the hill with his friends. His friends crawled down as they could not climb the steep hill, but Babu went ahead. While descending, he slipped and fell into the crevice. When his friends failed to reach him, they informed the locals.

Babu himself later informed the police. Babu was brought to safety by a mountaineering team of the Indian army in a marathon rescue operation, after trapped in the crevice for 46 hours.
