KOCHI: The deaths of whales and dolphins in the coastal areas of Alappuzha and Thrissur are suspected to be due to chemicals leaked from the sunken MSC Elsa 3 ship. The Environment Department will investigate the matter. Five whales and a dolphin died in Alappuzha and Munakkal Beach in Thrissur after the ship sank on May 25.

The Chalakudy DFO has submitted a report to the Environment Department to study whether they died due to chemical waste. A post-mortem conducted at the Agricultural University in Thrissur indicates that the cause of death was toxicity.

Meanwhile, the Central Fisheries Research Institute in Kochi has found that chemical waste did not mix with the sea in a way that caused the fish to die.
