One dead in lightning, houses damaged, power disrupted; Summer rains wreak havoc in North Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Summer rains are intensifying in Kerala. Heavy damage is being reported in North Kerala due to the sudden rains that lashed across the region. A person died after being struck by lightning in Edavanna, Malappuram. Kaari (65), a native of Palappotta, was struck by lightning while standing in his backyard.

Strong winds and rain continue in the hilly areas of Kozhikode district. A house collapsed in heavy rain in Mavoor. A passenger was injured when a tree branch fell in Koyilandy. The injured person is Adarsh, an LIC employee. He has been admitted to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. Heavy rains continue to lash in places like Kozhikode city, Nadapuram, Kuttiadi and hilly areas like Kannur, Thalassery, Taliparamba, Iritty and Alakode. The roof of a house collapsed in Koothuparamba. Power supply has been disrupted in many places.

The roof of a shop in Chittariparambil was blown off. The roof of the gymnasium here also collapsed, causing extensive damage. Coconut trees fell on three houses. Trees were uprooted on the road near Nadupoyil town, disrupting traffic.

The Indian Meteorological Department predicted a possibility of thundershowers and strong winds with a speed of 30 to 40 kmph in isolated places in Kerala today (28/03/2026) and tomorrow (29/03/2026). There is a possibility of thunderstorms from March 30 to April 1.
