THRISSUR: Reports said the overblown Kalunk debate which Union Minister Suresh Gopi implemented in his constituency Thrissur, is reportedly coming to an untimely end. Things are heading towards that point just after two debates. The reason pointed is that his replies and interventions in the debate lack political maturity and wisdom. Many including local leaders fear that this will be a setback for the party.
Reports say that all the three district committees in Thrissur have conveyed their serious concerns regarding this to the state leadership. As Suresh Gopi is very close to the central leadership, the local and district leaders are unable to make him understand that the present method is wrong or correct him. Therefore, the move is to bring the matter to the attention of the central leadership. Meanwhile, there are allegations that Suresh Gopi planned the Kalunk debate on the advice of a P R agency and is working as per their advice.
The Kalunk debate was planned on the model of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ‘Chai Pei Charcha’. The aim was to organize the people of each area and intervene in their common problems, find a solution to it, thus creating maximum popularity for the party amongst the people. The party centers in the constituency accepted this with open arms. The local committees were in charge to bring people to the debate and they did it beautifully.
The debate hit a snag right from the start. In the debate held at Cherpu, Suresh Gopi was not even ready to accept the application of an elderly man who had come with high hopes for a house. This led to severe criticisms. Taking advantage of this, the CPM announced to build a house for the elderly. With this, there was a talk amongst the BJP that the debate was conducted by them, but the CPM had reaped the benefits.
Everyone thought that such incidents would not happen again when Suresh Gopi came with an explanation for what had happened in Cherpu. It went wrong and, in the debate, held in Irinjalakuda the other day, Suresh Gopi behaved in the same way to an elderly woman, who came requesting to help her get the money she deposited in the Karuvannur Bank. This was celebrated by the media. Reports say this led to a consensus in the party centers that it is better to end the debate.
