Rain with thunderstorms coming: Orange and yellow alerts announced in various districts

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Central Meteorological Department has announced that there is a possibility of rain in Kerala for the next five days. Orange and yellow alerts have been issued in various districts. An orange alert has been issued in Kannur and Kasaragod districts on the 16th. The possibility of very heavy rainfall has been predicted in isolated places. By Very Heavy Rainfall, IMD means that there will be rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours.

IMD has declared a yellow alert in the mentioned districts. The possibility of isolated heavy rain is predicted. IMD defines heavy rainfall as a situation where rainfall of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm is received in 24 hours. Rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected.

Public Alert

  • Those living in areas prone to landslides, mudslides, and flash floods should move to safer places as per the instructions of the authorities.
  • Those living in riverbanks and downstream areas of dams should also take precautions and move as per the instructions of the authorities.
  • Those living in disaster-prone areas should ensure that camps are opened in their area and should move there during the day. For this, they can contact the local body and revenue authorities.
  • Those living in unsecured houses and those living in houses with weak roofs should be especially cautious as there is a possibility of strong winds. Those who foresee a dangerous situation should contact the authorities and move to safer places as a safety precaution.

  • It is not advised to cross rivers, bathe in rivers or other water bodies, fish or go for other purposes under any circumstances during heavy rains.
  • It is not advised to climb over bridges above water bodies to view the view, take selfies, or stand in groups.
  • Avoid non-essential travel during heavy rains. Recreational trips to waterfalls, water bodies, and hilly areas should be avoided until the rain warning is lifted.
