MEPPADI: This is the second birth of Soman (50), who was washed away by the Wayanad landslide and was buried neck-deep in mud in the middle of the river for several hours.
Since yesterday morning, the sight of Soman raising his hand towards the rescue workers and pleading to save him was another nightmare for the country shaken by the disaster. The rescue mission started after seeing these scenes.
Some 100 meters from the shore, downstream of Mundakkai School, was covered in mud. Shihab, a rescue worker, said that he raised his hand several times while drowning up to his neck. He gave courage in sign language that he could be saved.
Although he was visible to the rescuers, it was impossible to reach it. Despite two attempts, the rescue workers were also stuck in the mud. They reached Soman by tying together small logs and walking across them, holding the ropes and holding each other's hands. Soman was rescued at 3:30 pm.
When he was brought out, he could not even speak. There are health problems due to being covered in mud for a long time. He was admitted to a private medical college in Meppadi. He is seriously injured below the waist. Treatment including physiotherapy will be required.
