KOCHI: A days-old left palm was found under the engine compartment of a coach of the Bengaluru-Ernakulam Superfast Express train. The Ernakulam Railway Police has started an investigation in three states to identify the palm. The palm was found stuck in the air compressor under the general coach yesterday morning while a rake of 22 coaches was being repaired at the pitline of the Ernakulam marshalling yard. The palm was shifted to the Ernakulam General Hospital.

The same coaches were repaired at the marshalling yard on the 12th. The train, which then went to Bengaluru on the 14th, returned to Ernakulam South yesterday morning and was brought back to the yard for inspection and repair. The train covers 1,214 km in both directions and passes through the three states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. It is believed that the palm could belong to someone who died after being hit by the train. The Railway Police said that they will inform all the police stations in these areas. The palm will be cremated later after a postmortem is conducted and a DNA sample is collected.
