THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The meteorological department has advised extreme caution as temperatures rise across the state. Officials warn that the increasing heat could lead to serious health issues and even death. The advisory comes in view of intense heat conditions caused by high atmospheric humidity, creating a situation similar to a heatwave.

An orange alert has been issued in parts of four regions due to high ultraviolet (UV) index levels. The alert applies to Konni, Chengannur, Changanassery, and Munnar, where the UV index has reached eight.

Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays can cause sunburn, skin diseases, eye disorders, and other health issues. Authorities have therefore urged the public to take necessary precautions.

The UV index is highest between 10 am and 3 pm, and people are advised to avoid direct exposure to sunlight during these hours as much as possible. Extra caution is recommended for those engaged in outdoor work, fishermen and inland waters, water transport workers, bikers, tourists, individuals with skin conditions, those with albinism, eye diseases, cancer patients, and people with weak immunity.
