Strong water flow in Makkimala River in Wayanad; local residents warned to be cautious

KALPETTA: The flow of water in the Makkimala River in Wayanad is very strong due to heavy rains. It is reported that water has entered all the low-lying areas. The river is overflowing with muddy water. Authorities said that they are checking whether there has been a landslide. Authorities have also warned the local residents to be vigilant. It is raining heavily in Wayanad today.

Following heavy rains, resorts and home stays have been banned in nine panchayats of Mananthavady and Vethiri taluks. A 24-hour control room has been opened in Thavinhal grama panchayat. Wayanad is on orange alert today. The possibility of very heavy rain has been predicted in isolated places. The Meteorological Department defines very heavy rainfall as rainfall of 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours.

A red alert has been issued in three districts today. The red alert is in Idukki, Ernakulam and Thrissur districts. The possibility of very heavy rainfall has been predicted. The Meteorological Department defines extremely heavy rainfall as rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm in 24 hours.

IMD has declared a yellow alert in the mentioned districts. The possibility of isolated heavy rain is predicted. Heavy rain is defined as a situation where rain falls from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours. Extremely intense rain can cause accidents. The trend of heavy rain in a short time is expected. It may cause landslides and flash floods. There is a possibility of waterlogging in urban areas and low-lying areas in general. Continued rainfall may cause landslides and rockfalls. The public and government agencies should be extremely cautious.
