THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Food and Public Distribution Department is considering a plan to convert ration shops into mini maveli stores. This is in addition to providing ration items. This will help make Supplyco's services widely available to the public and ensure more income for ration traders.
The project is being seriously considered after Supplyco's market intervention during Onam was a huge success. If the project is implemented, all items including rice and groceries will be available to ration beneficiaries at low prices and subsidized rates.
Supplyco also provides subsidized goods to ration card holders. All ration shopkeepers have to do is prepare facilities for the trade of Supplyco goods. Supplyco will deliver the goods. There is no need to pay in advance; shopkeepers simply pay after the sale.
Another advantage is that the market intervention provided by Supplyco through subsidies when prices of goods soar can be made more efficient through ration shops.
