THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a concerning development, a power blackout for three long hours in SAT hospital invited the fury of patients and political parties. It was amidst strong protests from political parties and patients that the power was restored after three hours.
The power blackout took place in the women's and children’s block. Pregnant women, mothers and newborn babies were in the dark for three long hours amid the sweltering heat. The Child Rights Commission voluntarily registered a case in this regard. Power was restored by hiring a temporary generator. Appallingly, the hospital functioned through torch lights and candles during the three blackout hours.
The hospital superintendent claimed no power blackout in the children’s ICU section. Amidst the power crisis, the generator also stopped functioning, adding to the woes. The quick intervention of the health minister proved worthy and the temporary generator was delivered to the hospital. More police have arrived at the hospital due to heavy protests. There is tension in the area.
Minister of Health Veena George reacted promptly and took assistance from the electricity minister to alleviate tensions. The Joint Director of the Department of Medical Education confirmed no power blackout in the children’s section including the ICU.
