KOTTAYAM: Jismol, who committed suicide by jumping into a river with her children in Ettumanoor, was subjected to mental torture in her in-laws' house over money and skin complexion, according to her brother Jitu Thomas. Jismol's father and brother gave statements to the Ettumanoor police detailing the torture. They also told the police that they had not been able to contact her on the phone since two days before her death.

"It is suspected that her husband Jimmy had taken Jismol's phone. We had tried to pick up Jismol from Jimmy's house several times," the brother said. The bodies of Jismol and her children are currently kept in the mortuary of a private hospital in Pala. No decision has been made yet on when the funeral will take place.

Jismol's family is of the opinion that Jismol's funeral should not be held in Jimmy's parish church. However, according to the Knanaya Church law, the funeral should be held in her husband's parish. Discussions are also ongoing at the church level regarding this.

According to the initial information in the postmortem, the cause of death for all three was fluid in the lungs. The vein in Jismol's hand was severed. Jismol had a wound above the waist. Traces of disinfectant were found in the bodies of both children. Police investigations had indicated that Jismol had poisoned his children before jumping into the river.
