NEDUMBASSERY: Two customs officers were suspended by the Commissioner pending an investigation for helping gold smugglers by accepting money. Action has been taken against Anish and Umesh Kumar Singh, who work as Air Customs Superintendents at Kochi International Airport.
It is alleged that they have taken bribes and helped a passenger who arrived at Nedumbassery airport from Jeddah to smuggle gold. Following a tip-off, the passenger was caught by the Customs preventive officers at Kochi. Gold worth more than one crore rupees was seized from him and he showed the custom officials who helped him. They had accepted a bribe of Rs 10,000. The Commissioner of Customs took action on the basis of the report of preventive officers.
