THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Finance Minister KN Balagopal has announced that the first batch of houses under the Wayanad rehabilitation project will be handed over to eligible beneficiaries by the first week of February. The announcement was made in the final budget of the second Pinarayi government. He said the decision follows the assurance given in the previous budget to complete the rehabilitation of disaster-affected people in Wayanad in a timely manner.

The minister said that the construction of a township with 410 houses is progressing at the Elston Estate in Kalpetta. The township will include roads, a drainage system, a public health centre, a market, a community centre, an open theatre, a sewage treatment plant and playgrounds. He also added that monthly financial assistance and medical support are being provided to the dependents of those who died and to people affected by the disaster.
