Advantage LDF? Opposition’s delayed candidate rollout raises internal concerns

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPM candidates have hit the ground running immediately following the announcement of the Kerala assembly election dates. Many candidates launched roadshows in their respective constituencies the moment the announcement was made. Both the CPM and CPI party secretaries finalised their candidate lists shortly after the Election Commission’s press conference. The Left Front’s campaign is well underway, driven by the goal of securing a third consecutive term in power.

In contrast, the opposition has yet to announce its candidates. Despite earlier assurances from leadership—including the Leader of the Opposition—that candidates would be named immediately upon the announcement of the election, VD Satheesan has since clarified that the list will be released within 24 hours. While he projects public confidence, internal tensions remain high within the Congress-led UDF.

A final decision regarding whether sitting MPs will contest remains pending. K. Sudhakaran, who is adamant about his candidacy, has been summoned to Delhi tomorrow to discuss the matter. Furthermore, the party has yet to resolve candidacy issues for several other MPs. Even in the capital district, the Congress is struggling to settle on candidates for multiple constituencies.

With various names under discussion for many seats, there is growing concern within the party that the delay will hinder the Congress's electoral prospects, especially with only 23 days left until the polls. While the party is expected to retain most of its sitting seats, leadership acknowledges that this alone will not be enough to regain power. Consequently, it is unlikely that a final announcement will be made this Monday.
