Dr Zulfi Nuhu, former president of the Indian Medical Association, said that there is no evidence to show that yoga is better than other forms of physical exercise. In his Facebook post, Dr Nuhu stated that yoga is ineffective in treating lifestyle diseases.

'The scientific community has unequivocally proven that 30 minutes of walking, sports and swimming can prevent lifestyle diseases and increase life expectancy. However, no study has claimed that yoga is effective in treating such ailments,' he wrote.

Dr Nuhu also claimed that all the studies currently available on yoga are substandard.

'All studies currently available on yoga are substandard. Some studies are claiming that yoga will help to reduce anxiety and calm the mind. At the same time, there are clear and strong studies which state that yoga can pose serious physical risks,' Dr Nuhu added.
