TEHRAN: Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has sought Russian President Vladimir Putin's help after the US attacked Iran's nuclear facilities. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Putin in Moscow on Khamenei's instructions. Araghchi handed over Khamenei's letter to Putin. Putin said the absolutely unprovoked aggression against Iran has no basis and no justification and that he would help the Iranian people. Khamenei is said to be dissatisfied with the current position of Russia, a long-time partner, and wants more support from Russia. Putin has previously said he is ready to mediate in the Israel-Iran conflict.
US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have made public statements about the assassination of Khamenei and regime change in Iran. Russia and China condemned the US bombing of Iran's nuclear facilities at a UN Security Council meeting on Sunday and called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Middle East.
No confrontation
Russia is not interested in clashing with the US over Iran as the war in Ukraine continues. Russia has not criticized Trump as there is mediation regarding the Ukraine war and improving Russia-US relations, which deteriorated under Joe Biden.
No limits to attacks
Israel says it will eliminate the Iranian regime's ability to maintain power. While the initial targets were nuclear, military and missile sites, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said there would be no limits to the attacks from now on. Israel's bombing of Evin prison in northern Tehran is part of this. Part of the prison was destroyed, but no one was killed.
