MALAPPURAM: With just six days left to apply for Hajj, applications from Kerala have so far doubled the possible quota. As of Saturday, 14,227 people have applied. 11,059 in general category, 1,119 in 70 years category and 2,049 in women category without mahram (male guardian).
Last year, the Saudi Hajj Ministry allotted 79,237 seats to India. Out of this, 56,061 seats were allotted to the State Hajj Committees while Kerala's quota was limited to 5,766. This time India's quota is 1,75,025. Kerala's quota will increase proportionately. The State Hajj Committee believes that applicants will increase as the last date is March 10. Hajj quota is proportional to the Muslim population of each state. Kerala's demand is that the quota should be based on the number of applicants. Kerala is leading in the number of Hajj pilgrims in the country. But Kerala will be behind when allocating seats in proportion to population.
