THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: BEVCO is all set to increase the daily production of the popular 'Jawan' rum from 7000 cases to 15,000 cases. At BEVCO-owned Travancore Sugars and Chemicals in Thiruvalla's Valanjavattam, two more lines (a system for bottling spirits after adding water, colour, and flavouring) will be commissioned on April 15. A bottle is priced at Rs 610 per litre. A premium brand of 'Jawan' priced at Rs 700 will also be launched in the market.
BEVCO's Palakkad and Malabar distilleries (the old Chittoor Cooperative Sugar Mill) will also start rum production. 15,000 cases will be produced per day on five lines. The name of the new brand and its price will be kept secret. 86 acres out of 110 here will be used for distillery. 26 acres will be given for the panchayat's needs. The total cost will be Rs 28 crores. which includes 18 crores for five lines.
With the two units operational, BEVCO will be able to produce half of the daily requirement of cheap rum in the state. The unit for making wine from cashew will begin at the site of Malabar Distilleries. A private entrepreneur selected on tender basis can operate the winery on a BOT basis.
