VARKALA: The special squad of Food Safety department conducted inspection at Punnamoodu fish market. Around 35 kg stale and ammonia added fish was seized from here. On Tuesday afternoon, the special squad conducted an inspection on the basis of a complaint that stale fish was being sold regularly in the Punnamoodu market.

The presence of ammonia was detected in the fish during the tests conducted at the mobile lab. 25 kg of Chemballi (Red Snapper) and 10 kg of Choora (Tuna) were mixed with ammonia and was put up for sale. Although stale and worm-infested fish have been seized by the municipal health department earlier, such fish are again being sold here. The Food Safety Department also took steps to destroy the fish seized on Tuesday.
