'Nandini' milk for sale at Rs 12 less than Milma, setback for dairy farmers in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Milk trading by the Karnataka Milk Marketing Federation (Nandini) by circumventing the co-operative rules and encroaching on the jurisdiction of another organization has become a setback for Milma and dairy farmers.

After opening outlets in Ernakulam and Manjeri across the border to sell milk and milk products, 'Nandini' also issued an ad inviting 100 franchisees in Kerala.

'Nandini' milk is priced up to Rs 12 less than Milma's milk. The Karnataka government gives Nandini an annual incentive of Rs 1200 crores, so the milk can be sold at a lower price.

With the expansion of outlets, the sale of 'Nandini' milk will increase. If the market for Milma milk decreases, Milma will not be able to buy milk from farmers. Although this is a serious problem, neither the state government nor the dairy development department has taken any action against the action of the Karnataka government.

The irony is that the Karnataka Milk Marketing Federation and the Government of Karnataka, which protested against the opening of an 'Amul' outlet in Karnataka recently, led by the farmers, have encroached into Kerala and are selling 'Nandini' brand milk and other products. Although 'Amul' has outlets in Kerala, it does not sell milk but only value-added products including ice cream.
