Sandeep called police as complainant, says ADGP Ajith Kumar

-sandeep-

KOCHI: ADGP MR Ajith Kumar said that Sandeep, the accused who killed the woman doctor Vandana Das of Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital, was brought to the hospital as an injured complainant. He called the control room and complained that he was being attacked. According to this, the police reached the spot. As Sandeep was injured, he was taken to hospital.

The ADGP was reacting in Kochi against the background of criticism that the police took a violent man to the hospital without handcuffing him, which led to a tragic incident.

Sandeep was not an accused when he was taken to the hospital. He first called at 1:30 in the night saying that someone is trying to kill him. There was no response when the police called him back. He then called again at 3.30 am. Then when the police arrived, he was standing with a stick in front of a house half a kilometer away from the place where he called. He was taken to the hospital along with his relative who was there. He was calm when admitted to the emergency department. Later dressings and X-rays were prescribed. It was while dressing that he violently turned towards his relative. Then the two policemen were attacked. Everyone managed to escape. It was after this that the doctor was attacked. Vandana could not run away.

It is not known how Sandeep was injured. The information received from the locals is that he is a teacher and an alcoholic. "There was a police aid post and an officer at the taluk hospital. There are certain rules about who can't be handcuffed", the ADGP said. The ADGP was not ready to respond to questions about police lapses.
