KOCHI: More than 4 electric scooter showrooms in Kochi were shut down by the Motor Vehicle Department for selling modified vehicles that can cover a speed twice as promised by the dealers. Transport Commissioner S Sreejith took hold of the inspection and searched more than 12 electric scooter showrooms in the state. It was Keralakaumudi that reported intensely about the deceit being played by the electric scooter showrooms to attract more customers. The scoop was published on April 6th.
Electric scooters don't need registration. However, the speed should be restricted to 25km per hour and the motor strength limited to 250 watts. Meanwhile, many dealers were eyeing mightiness by increasing the motor strength to 100 watts which will ensure the speed goes beyond 50 km per hour. In yesterday's inspection alone, many scooters were found to have more than 1800 watts of motor capacity.
The scooters were tested at the Sophisticated Test and Instrumentation Center inside CUSAT. Yed electric and Eletcro wheels are the major showrooms closed by the officials.
