KYIV: Russia launched heavy airstrikes against Ukraine. A missile attack on a market in a major city in eastern Ukraine has killed 16 people. 28 people were injured. A child is also among the dead. The death toll is likely to rise as many are seriously injured. It is reported that the attack is a retaliation for the killing of 49 Russian elite soldiers who went to defend Russia against Ukraine.

It is reported that a Russian S-300 missile hit the city of Kostiantynivka. International media reports that bodies are scattered at the scene. Several vehicles and tents in the market were also gutted. Following the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for tough action against Russian evil.

Meanwhile, Russia has started regional elections in the Luhansk, Donetsk, Seporsia and Kherson regions it seized from Ukraine last year. These regions cover one-fifth of Ukraine. Elections will end on September 10.
