NEW DELHI: Rahul Navin, a 1993 batch IRS officer, and Special Director of the ED has assumed the role of Acting Director for the ED. The Supreme Court-set term of the controversial director, Sanjay Kumar Mishra concluded yesterday. Following this, Rahul Navin was appointed as the Acting Director by the central government, a position he will hold until a full-time director is appointed. It's worth noting that Rahul Navin also serves as the Chief Vigilance Officer at the Enforcement Directorate headquarters in Delhi and hails from Bihar.
Sanjay Kumar Mishra has consistently faced criticism from the opposition during his tenure. The central government even introduced an amendment to extend Mishra's term in the ED director's position, as he was favoured by the central government. However, due to the Supreme Court's intervention, Mishra had to vacate the position before completing his designated term. On July 11, the Centre's attempt to circumvent the court's order and grant two one-year extensions was deemed illegal. Initially, the Supreme Court had directed him to resign by July 31 but at the central government's request, his service was allowed to continue until yesterday. Mishra assumed the role of ED Director in November 2018.
