KOCHI: The High Court ordered that date and time of preparation of food products should be specified on the packaging. This condition should be strictly followed whether it is given over the counter or by parcel. Justice Devan Ramachandran's order also said that the Food Safety Commissioner should take steps to create awareness among consumers to consume these within the permissible time frame.
The High Court was hearing the petition filed by Prasanna, mother of Plus One student Devananda from Kasaragod who died after eating shawarma.
It has also been directed to notify the action taken against the food establishments that have violated the existing rules and regulations. The petitioner approached the High Court seeking compensation. Food Safety Commissioner Afsana Parveen was present online to explain the process on the petition. Last January, the Food Safety Commissioner had ordered that raw eggs should not be used to make mayonnaise. In September last year, guidelines were also issued for making shawarma.
Food safety commissioner also explained that making shawarma and eating it after the specified time is dangerous.
