THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kanam Rajendran, Secretary of CPI in Kerala who had sought a three-month leave due to declining health, nominated Benoy Vishwam to lead the party during his absence. However, his sudden passing has shocked the political landscape just as the National Executive Committee planned to decide on his leave application and replacement on the 16th and 17th of this month.
Rajendran had formally requested a three-month leave from the party's national leadership citing health concerns and had specifically proposed Benoy Vishwam to assume interim leadership. Earlier rumours suggested Rajendran might step down due to his health, which he refuted assuring there would be a transition plan upon his departure.
While reports disclosed Rajendran's health issues, there were no indications of his condition being fatal apart from complications from diabetes. Therefore, news of his demise has sent shockwaves through Kerala's political arena. The CPI National Secretary D Raja expressed disbelief at the sudden death.
Rajendran's unique ability to grasp and respond to various issues accurately and adeptly handle media situations made him an invaluable asset to the CPI. The party's stance on policy matters or controversies had been relatively quiet in recent years due to lack of engagement. Finding a replacement capable of matching Rajendran's expertise will be a challenging task for the CPI, even with his suggested successor in place.
