'Funds for celebrations, none for pensions'; High Court criticizes government

KOCHI: The High Court raised concerns over the State Government's inability to supply widow pensions emphasizing the need for prioritizing essential measures. This came to light during Mariyakutty's petition against the discontinuation of her widow pension. She hails from Adimali, Idukki.

Mariyakutty's plea stemmed from the State's allocation of funds for celebrations while neglecting widow pensions. Justice Devan Ramachandran urged the government to either reinstate Mariyakutty's pension or support her expenses for three months emphasizing the critical need for medical and food expenses.

Mariyakutty, resorting to a begging strike to protest the suspension of social welfare pensions sought legal recourse against the halt of the widow's pension.

The State Government defended itself stating the lack of funds received from the central government since April for social welfare pension distribution. The High Court adjourned the petition seeking an explanation from the central government with the State expected to confirm today its ability to remunerate Mariyakutty.

The Court has prioritised Mariyakutty's case recognizing her as a senior citizen facing financial hardship. Highlighting her meager pension of Rs 1,600 and the dire need for it, the Court underscored the plight of thousands in similar situations.

Amidst the Christmas season, the 78-year-old's plea for the widow's pension during a time of festivities resonated with the Court emphasizing the unfortunate circumstances faced by marginalized people.
