Nayanthara's film 'Annapoorani' removed from Netflix after outrage, Zee Studios issues apology

'Annapoorani' directed by Nilesh Krishnaa starring South Indian superstar Nayanthara has been removed from Netflix following outrage from various Hindu groups. The film is jointly produced by Zee Studios, Naad Sstudios and Trident Arts.

A complaint against the makers of said film was filed by former Shiv Sena leader Ramesh Solanki alleging that it hurt religious sentiments. In a post on 'X' he called the film anti-Hindu and said the scene where Lord Rama eats meat offended religious sentiments.

Zee Studio said in a press release that it apologizes for hurting religious sentiments and will ask Netflix to remove it from the platform until editing the controversial scenes.

“At a time when the whole world is rejoicing in anticipation of the Pran Pratishtha of Bhagwan Shri Ram Mandir, this anti-Hindu film Annapoorani has been released on Netflix, produced by Zee Studios, Naad Sstudios and Trident Arts,” Ramesh Solanki wrote on X.

He also mentioned the scenes that offended him, writing, “A daughter of Hindu Poojari, offers Namaz to cook Biryani. Love Jihad is promoted in this Film. Farhan (Actor) persuades the actress to eat meat saying that Bhagwan Shri Ram was also a meat eater.”

Ramesh Solanki, who filed a complaint with the Mumbai Police in this regard, requested Maharashtra Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis to take strict action.

Apart from Ramesh Solanki, Vishwa Hindu Parishad spokesperson Sriraj Nair also came forward against the film. After sharing a scene from the movie, Shriraj Nair said that if the movie is not withdrawn immediately, the makers will face legal action. Nayanthara plays Annapoorani Rangarajan, the daughter of a temple priest in the film.

Annapoorani hit theaters on December 1 and streamed on Netflix on December 29.
