TORONTO: The Canadian government is about to reduce the arrival of students from other countries. Minister Mark Miller said the number of students would be limited in the coming months because it is already out of control. He said this in an interview given to a Canadian media.
At present, about 9 lakh international students are studying in Canada in various institutions. Most of them are Indians. The minister said that the number would be limited but did not specify the exact figure. Mark Miller said that he will announce the percentage reduction after the negotiations.
According to information provided by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, India has the largest number of international students in Canada. As of November 2023, out of 5,79,075 international students, 215,910 are Indians. In 2022, 225,835 out of 548,785 were Indians. Canada has been taking measures to restrict international students since late last year. Of the applicants from January 1 this year, students will need to show that they have at least 12.7 lakh rupees (CA$20,635) in their accounts. Earlier it was Rs 6.14 lakh (CA$ 10,000).
