THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Celine Wilfred, a prominent figure in the legal arena, breathed her last at the age of 88 at Cheriythura Selville House in Vallakkadavu. She dedicated her life to the legal profession serving as a criminal lawyer and public prosecutor at the Vanchiyoor court till her final days. Despite battling age, Celine remained committed to her courtroom duties leaving behind a legacy of six decades in the legal field.

Celine embarked on her legal journey in 1959, starting as a clerk in the Payyannur Munsiff Court before transitioning into the legal profession. Her determination led her to seek a transfer to Thiruvananthapuram to care for her elderly mother but bureaucratic hurdles delayed her plans. However, with the guidance of Anna Chandi, India's first female judge and her husband Wilfred Sebastian, she pursued a career in law.

Together, Celine and Wilfred embarked on a new chapter enrolling in Government Law College Thiruvananthapuram in 1965. Under the mentorship of Senior Advocate K Velappan Nair, they commenced their practice at the Vanchiyoor Court. Their dedication soon earned them positions as public prosecutors with Celine serving five terms from 1972 to 1987 under two administrations.

In 1987, Celine transitioned to defense law, representing clients in criminal cases with diligence and expertise. Her influence extended beyond the courtroom, with over 200 disciples including former minister Antony Raju, benefiting from her mentorship. Despite the loss of her husband Wilfred 27 years ago, Celine continued to excel in her legal pursuits.

She approached each case meticulously, securing convictions in approximately 100 cases throughout her career. One of her notable triumphs was the Pillathailam case, where she ensured justice for a kidnapped and murdered infant.

The demise of Former Govt. Pleader Celine Wilfred has garnered condolences from prominent figures, including Archbishop Dr Susaipakyam, Antony Raju MLA and Palode Ravi.
