KYIV: General Oleksandr Syrsky has been appointed as the new Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Last day, President Volodymyr Zelensky fired Valerii Zaluzhnyi, who had been the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces since 2021.

On the 24th of this month, two years have passed since the beginning of the Russian invasion, and the military-led disbandment of Ukraine. Valery and Zelensky were reportedly at loggerheads over the ongoing Russian offensive.

At the same time, Valery was honored with the country's highest honor, the Hero of Ukraine. Zelensky also stated that he will remain in the top military command. Noted for keeping the capital Kiev out of Russian hands and conducting counterattack missions in eastern Ukraine, Valery had strong popular and military support.

Opposition party MPs criticized Zelensky's decision to remove Valery. Since 2019, under the leadership of Oleksandr Syrsky, the commander of Ukraine's army, the eastern city of Bakhmut has put up a strong resistance against Russia.

Seven children, including a baby, were killed in a Russian drone attack in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv yesterday morning. An attack took place on a petrol station in the region. About fifteen houses are damaged.
