KOCHI: A plea has been filed in the Kerala High Court against the much anticipated Mammootty-starrer 'Bramayugam' which is gearing up for release. The plea was filed by the family members of the Punchaman Illam in Kottayam demanding the withdrawal of the censor certificate granted to the film.

Mammootty plays the role of Kunchaman Poti aka Punchaman Poti in the film. In the petition filed in the High Court, this role is portrayed as using the family name and title of the Punchaman Illam. The character is also shown to be practising black magic etc. According to the petitioners, all this will tarnish the reputation of their family. The court has sent notice to the concerned parties on the petition.

'The members of Punchaman Illam are mentioned in Aithihyamala written by Kottarathil Sankunni. The information that has come out regarding the movie suggests that the story of the movie is taken from Aithihyamala. Punchaman Poti, the hero of the film, is a person who practices black magic and so on. This will give the family a bad name in front of the society,' the petition read.

'A movie starring an actor like Mammootty will influence a lot of people. Neither the director nor the crew of the film have contacted us. We fear that such a portrayal is a deliberate attempt to tarnish the family and bring shame to us in front of the society,' the petition added.

The petition demands that the names and references related to the Punchaman family used in the film must be removed.

The trailer of Bramayugam was released the other day. The trailer, which has many mysteries hidden in it, has already gone viral. The trailer launch was done by Mammootty at the event held at Al Wahda Mall in Abu Dhabi. Apart from Mammootty, Arjun Ashokan, Siddharth Bharathan, Amalda Liz and Manikandan Achari play pivotal characters in Bramayugam. The film will hit theatres on February 15.
