NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday dedicated India's first underwater metro tunnel in Kolkata, which was built 16 meters below the bed of the Hooghly River for a length of 520 meters. After the inauguration, the Prime Minister travelled in the metro along with the school students. During his journey from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan, PM Modi interacted with students.
This engineering marvel is part of Kolkata Metro's 16.6 km corridor that connects Howrah on the west side of the Hooghly River with Salt Lake City on the east bank.
This is the deepest metro station in India, built almost at a depth of 40 m below the ground level; That equals the height of a ten-story building.
