A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the earth and the sun forming a perfect alignment so that the moon completely covers the sun and blocks the rays of the sun from reaching the earth. A solar eclipse occurs at some point on Earth once every 18 months. However, any given area will only experience a total solar eclipse every 100 years on average.

It is reported that the solar eclipse that will take place on April 8 will last up to 7.5 minutes. It is also believed to be the longest solar eclipse in the last 50 years.

People in countries like Mexico, the United States and Canada will be able to witness the total solar eclipse this time. About 32 million people will have the chance to witness the sun's corona. It is advised not to look directly at the sun and to use specialised solar viewing glasses.
