Italy PM Giorgia Meloni fights back against infamous 2020 deepfake pornography

MILAN: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has filed a compensation of 100,000 euros in a case over uploading her deepfake porn video on social media. The Italian Prime Minister has demanded compensation of around 90 lakh Indian rupees. It was in 2020 that a deep fake video of Georgia Meloni first appeared on a porn website in the US. Within a few months, the video was almost viewed by millions.

The court asked Meloni to appear in Sassari on July 2 to testify in connection with the case. The police stated that a case had been registered against a 40-year-old man and his 73-year-old father in connection with the fake video. The police arrested the accused after tracking the smartphone which they used to upload the video on the internet.

The deep fake video was uploaded before she assumed office as the Prime Minister. Meloni said the compensation is a symbolic gesture to give courage to exploited women to speak up and she said the amount will be donated to an organization that works for abused women.

Defamation is a criminal offence punishable by imprisonment under Italian law. Giorgia Meloni is Italy's first female Prime Minister.
