Sathyabhama and the shadow of intolerance in artistic discourse

j

The question of where beauty resides has long been debated in artistic circles. However, the controversy surrounding Kalamandalam Sathyabhama's YouTube interview, where she criticized black-skinned individuals for performing Mohiniyattam and made derogatory remarks about them, shows no signs of resolution. Comments such as "Some people with the color of a crow" and "even his mother could not bear to see him" are highly offensive and reflect Sathyabhama's casteist mindset.

Although Sathyabhama didn't directly mention the esteemed dancer LLV Ramakrishnan in her speech, Ramakrishnan is preparing to take legal action, recognizing himself as the "black Chalakudikaran who performs Mohiniyattam."

Sathyabhama argues that to perform Mohiniyattam, one must have a beautiful body, but beauty is not solely defined by appearance; it extends to the emotional depth conveyed through artistic expression. True beauty transcends mere physical attributes and should be experienced at a profound sensory level.

Sathyabhama's misrepresentation of Mohiniyattam as being contingent upon the performer's skin color is misguided. Despite legal ramifications, she remains unapologetic, denying any wrongdoing. Instead of perpetuating outdated stereotypes, she should reflect on her cultural upbringing and education.

The Human Rights Commission has taken action against Sathyabhama, and some political parties advocate for legal recourse under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act. RLV Ramakrishnan, supported by the public, is also pursuing legal action.

The late actor Kalabhavan Mani, renowned for his folk songs, is celebrated not for grammatical correctness or scientific precision but for the sincerity of his expression. His brother, artist RLV Ramakrishnan, is supported not only by those who appreciate art but also by those attuned to societal evolution.
