ISLAMABAD: A 40-year-old woman was sentenced to life imprisonment for burning pages of the holy book of Islam — the Quran. The sentence was handed down by a court in Pakistan's Punjab province. Asiya Bibi was arrested by the police in 2021 from the Bedian Road area of Lahore.

The woman was arrested on a complaint lodged by her neighbours saying that she had burnt a Quran outside her house. Asiya was booked under laws including blasphemy and was sentenced to life imprisonment last Thursday.

The lawyer who appeared for Asiya said that the neighbour had deliberately lied about seeing the incident as there already existed a discord between them. But the prosecutor argued that Asiya was caught red-handed when she burned the Quran copy in front of the house.

The court after considering the hearing sentenced the woman to life imprisonment and found her guilty for the crime. Asiya’s lawyer will move Supreme Court in hopes of annulling the Punjab court's decision.
